The Orangewood Friendship Garden ....
About the Garden:
The
Orangewood Friendship Garden began in the 2nd half of 2009 with the
following goals:
|
Reach out to the
surrounding community, particularly families, youth and those in need.
|
Create a garden for
people of all levels of gardening experience and ability.
|
Promote environmental
improvement and awareness.
|
Provide new community activities and resources. |
A group
of interested people from the Orangewood Presbyterian Church and the surrounding
community formed a garden committee to plan how to get the garden started. The church donated an unused portion of its parking lot and the area was
graded in November. By December the garden was laid out and compost bins were in
place. From the beginning, community support for the garden was strong and more
than half of the first-season gardens were rented by community members.
The
Orangewood Friendship Garden is open to all individuals and groups. First-time
gardeners are welcome and workshops are held to give information about planting,
soil preparation, garden maintenance, and using produce.
Joining the garden is easy. Just call 602-944-1508 or visit the church office at 7321 North 10th Street, Phoenix, Arizona, to obtain an application. You’ll be given a copy of the “Garden Guidelines”. Fees are $20 per garden bed (for one growing season) plus a clean-up deposit of $25. When you rent a garden bed you’ll be asked to sign a liability waiver. After completing these few steps, you’ll receive instructions on using the storage shed, compost bins, and watering facilities of the garden. Updates about the garden will be sent to you by email.
Meetings
of the garden committee are held the 2nd Tuesday of each month at
6:45 pm at Orangewood Presbyterian Church.
